Found right across Africa, this medium sized falcon can often be seen chasing small birds, small reptiles and even bats. This falcon will often co-operate in a pair to do this and centre its focus on a gathering point for colonial birds – where it can confuse and panic its prey. This method of hunting saves time climbing to a height in order to stoop.
The Lanner falcon has a dark malar stripe under each eye. This dark feathering is thought to help to prevent glare for the falcon when hunting.
