This large owl of the upper northern hemisphere is a perfect example of a raptor that primarily uses hearing to find prey. The huge facial disc on the great grey owl gathers sound like a giant ear, enabling them to hear the scratching and scurrying of lemmings under fallen snow.
This owl is not actually as large as it appears. Built for colder climes, this owl has vert thick feathers; underneath them it’s much smaller than the European Eagle Owl.
