From South America, this is an owl of largely tropical rainforest habitats where it preys upon small mammals up to the size of skunks.
As this owl develops slowly by comparison to other owls, they often depend on their parents for over a year – which is a long time in the owl world!
Spectacled owls are also capable of taking on prey much larger than themselves – some reports suggest they can take three-toed sloths and opossums!
